Communication is at the core of what makes Roblox a vibrant social platform, the systems you build will define how tens of millions of people connect every day.</p> <p><br>You will work with teams across Game Engine, Safety, and ML Platform, building backend services at scale, data pipelines, and ML models that strengthen the underlying chat and policy infrastructure. You will build and ship detection systems that identify chat violations and continuously evolve to outpace bad actors circumventing our safety policies. As a core contributor to a broader suite of communication products, you will drive feature development while embedding safety into the foundation of the platform.</p> <p> </p> <p>If you are a developer with an understanding of large scale systems and want to shape how the next generation of Roblox users interact safely in the metaverse, you’ll be right at home within our highly-skilled and rapidly growing team.</p> <p> </p> <p><em> </em></p> <p><strong>You will:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Engineer and scale the communication infrastructure that supports millions of concurrent users, architecting highly reliable systems that keep chat civil, proactively detect violations using machine learning models and data pipelines, and define how people connect on Roblox.</li> <li>Work with cutting-edge ML—model tuning and prompt engineering—to build safe chat experiences that are novel even by industry standards.</li> <li>Contribute as needed to the full spectrum of communication product development, from core infrastructure and safety systems to user-facing features.</li> <li>Introduce and improve our processes to help us be more effective and efficient.</li> <li>Enforce high quality standards while we iterate on feature development.</li> <li>Collaborate with other engineering and product teams (Game engine, Creator, Trust & Safety to name a few) at the company to push the boundary of what is possible</li> <li>Self-organize and take ownership of projects throughout its full lifecycle.</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p><strong>You have:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Experience in backend software development</li> <li>2+ years industry experience building and supporting ML systems in a production environment.</li> <li>Hold a Bachelor’s degree <strong>or equivalent experience</strong> in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a similar technical field.</li> <li>Experience collaborating with backend engineers on client/server design and architecture for high-scale products, including knowledge of performance principles like caching and modern technologies.</li> <li>Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners in Product, Design, and Data Science to drive meaningful results that align with the team's overarching vision</li> </ul> <p><br><br></p> <p><strong>You are: </strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>Responsible</strong>: you build systems that work and keep on working reliably. Able to write clear design specs, mentor junior engineers, and guide projects from beginning to end</li> <li><strong>Data-driven</strong> focused on quality metrics and monitoring</li> </ul> <p>Bonus:</p> <ul> <li>Experience building communication products and features.</li> <li>Experience working closely with design, strong design interest/background.</li> <li>Experience with LLMs</li> <li>Experience using big data query/processing languages and tools such as SQL, Hive, Spark and Airflow</li> <li>Experience of test driven development.</li> </ul><div class="content-pay-transparency"><div class="pay-input"><div class="description"><p>For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
