LOCATION: Singapore
CRITERIA: Current students studying in Universities which are based in Singapore
INTERNSHIP DURATION: The internship will begin on either 4 Jan 2027, and will end on 28 May 2027. There is an option to extend the internship, with the extended period concluding on a fixed date of 6 Aug 2027.
Intern- Development of Optical Characterization Methods for Electro-Optical advanced Packaging Technologies
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO LEARN:
- Hands-on experience with optical and laser measurement equipment used to characterize electro-optical devices and IC packaging-related optical links.
- Practical understanding of optical power, insertion loss, return loss, polarization extinction ratio, wavelength, attenuation, switching, and thermal-stability measurements.
- Experience developing repeatable measurement methods, basic instrument automation, data analysis, uncertainty checks, and technical documentation.
- Exposure to laboratory bring-up activities such as equipment checkout, safety practices, calibration checks, fixture readiness, troubleshooting, and collaboration with vendors and engineers.
- Opportunity to convert experimental results into clear plots, test reports, standard work instructions, and recommendations that support future lab users.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The Singapore Optics Lab is bringing up a new set of optics and laser characterization tools. The intern will work with the lab team to qualify selected instruments and accessories, establish baseline test methods, and create repeatable workflows for optical component and electro-optical device characterization. The average day may include equipment setup, sample or reference-device preparation, measurement execution, data review, script development, troubleshooting, and documentation. The project will emphasize safe laboratory practices, traceable results, and methods that can be transferred to future users.
By the end of the term, the intern is expected to deliver a characterized subset of the laboratory toolchain, validated measurement workflows, reusable data-analysis or automation scripts where practical, and a concise technical report summarizing performance, limitations, and recommended next steps.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop measurement workflows for optical power, attenuation, wavelength, insertion loss and return loss, polarization extinction ratio, switching paths, thermal cycling, and electro-optical response, as applicable to the assigned tools.
- Analyse results with suitable plots and basic statistical checks; identify measurement variation, setup sensitivity, and tool or method limitations.
- Automate data capture and analysis using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or vendor software when practical; maintain clear version-controlled scripts and test records.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR:
- Careful and methodical when handling electro-optical devices, and laboratory equipment.
- Able to troubleshoot systematically, document observations clearly, and seek guidance when operating limits or safety requirements are unclear.
- Comfortable working collaboratively with engineers, laboratory users, and equipment vendors.
- Good written and verbal communication, with attention to data integrity and laboratory discipline.
RELEVANT SKILLSETS:
- Basic electrical/electronic laboratory skills, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal integrity awareness, and safe equipment setup.
- Fundamentals of optics or photonics
- Programming or data analysis using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools; ability to process CSV files and generate clear engineering plots.
- Useful but not mandatory: familiarity with semiconductor packaging, electro-optical testing, thermal control, instrument control interfaces.
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
- Graduate students pursuing PhD degrees in EE, Photonic, Optics.
