Role overview
About this role
The iPad System EE team is responsible for the design, implementation, and electrical validation of iPad hardware architectures. We are seeking a passionate and driven Hardware Engineering Intern to join our team in delivering next-generation iPad platforms.
In this role, you will work side-by-side with experienced System EE engineers on board bring-up, hardware validation, lab instrumentation, and failure analysis. You will bridge hardware and software by developing automated test scripts, isolating complex electrical issues, and leveraging modern engineering and AI-assisted workflows to accelerate hardware development cycles.
Hardware Bring-up & Debug: Participate in prototype PCBA bring-up and power-on sequencing. Utilize lab bench instrumentation (high-bandwidth oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, DMMs, and active probes) to troubleshoot and isolate signal integrity, power, and functional issues. Validation & Characterization: Execute comprehensive test plans against design specifications across power rails, high-speed interfaces, and peripheral buses (I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe, USB). Collaborate with cross-functional partners (Silicon, Firmware, Software, and Product Design) on system-level validation. Automation & Scripting: Develop, enhance, and maintain automated test scripts (primarily in Python) to control test equipment, stimulate physical devices, and increase validation coverage. AI & Workflow Innovation: Explore and apply modern AI coding tools and agentic workflows to streamline data parsing, automated log analysis, script generation, and engineering documentation. Data Analysis & Technical Reporting: Process large parametric datasets, identify statistical margins and test trends, and prepare concise technical reports and failure analysis (FA) summaries.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a BS, MS, or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Solid fundamentals in electrical engineering (analog/digital circuit analysis, power delivery, and signal integrity basics).
- Hands-on lab experience with circuit assembly, soldering, schematic/layout reading, and standard bench instrumentation (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies).
- Basic proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language (Python, C/C++, or Shell).
- Good written and verbal English communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with computer/embedded architectures (ARM, MCU, or SoC peripheral buses such as I2C, SPI, UART, USB, PCIe).
- Experience writing instrument control scripts (PyVISA, SCPI) or automated hardware test benches.
- Experience or strong interest in leveraging modern AI tools and agentic workflows (e.g., LLM coding assistants, automated script generation, or AI-assisted data analysis) to enhance engineering productivity.
- Strong analytical mindset, curiosity to explore cutting-edge technologies, and ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
- Ability to commit to a 6-month on-site internship (start date flexible/aligned with academic calendar).
