Assists in various tasks aligned with their field of study, including research, collaboration on team initiatives and projects, problem-solving, and creative thinking to gain hands-on experience and develop professional skills. Includes internships, research roles, visiting scholar positions, or other program-related opportunities.
Job Summary
We are seeking a Switching Technical Support Engineer Intern to join the Switching Technical Support organization. The intern will assist with the investigation and troubleshooting of technical issues involving EX switching products and related enterprise networking technologies.
The ideal candidate is a currently enrolled university student with a strong interest in enterprise networking, switching, routing, troubleshooting, and customer-focused technical support.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Technical Support Engineers with the investigation of technical cases involving EX switches and related network environments.
- Support the troubleshooting of Layer 2 and basic Layer 3 connectivity issues.
- Assist with the analysis of issues involving:
- VLANs and trunking.
- Spanning Tree Protocol.
- Link aggregation.
- Layer 3 interfaces.
- Routing and switching behavior.
- DHCP and DNS connectivity.
- Authentication and access control.
- Network performance and device health.
- Collect and organize technical information from customers, internal teams, and laboratory environments.
- Review device configurations, logs, event messages, interface statistics, and network topology information.
- Assist with problem reproduction in a laboratory or simulated network environment.
- Use basic diagnostic tools and commands to analyze network behavior.
- Support the preparation of technical case summaries, troubleshooting records, and escalation documentation.
- Participate in team meetings, technical training, case reviews, and knowledge-sharing activities.
- Document troubleshooting procedures, findings, and solutions in accordance with team standards.
- Assist with the creation and maintenance of internal knowledge-base content.
- Escalate complex or high-impact issues to senior engineers with accurate technical information and clear problem descriptions.
- Follow established Technical Assistance Center processes and quality standards.
- Maintain a strong focus on customer satisfaction and timely case progression.
- Complete assigned technical learning activities and projects.
- Work collaboratively with engineers, peers, and cross-functional teams.
Education and Experience
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in:
- Computer Science.
- Computer Engineering.
- Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
- Information Technology.
- Telecommunications.
- Networking or a related technical field.
- Basic academic or practical knowledge of computer networking.
- Previous professional technical support experience is not required.
- Experience through university laboratories, personal projects, internships, or technical certifications is desirable.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Basic understanding of networking concepts, including:
- Ethernet.
- TCP/IP.
- IPv4 and IPv6 fundamentals.
- Subnetting.
- ARP, ICMP, TCP, and UDP.
- DNS and DHCP.
- VLANs and trunking.
- Basic Layer 2 and Layer 3 troubleshooting.
- Introductory understanding of switching technologies, including:
- Spanning Tree Protocol and its variants.
- Link Aggregation Control Protocol.
- Access and trunk ports.
- MAC address learning.
- Basic routing and default gateways.
- Familiarity with basic network troubleshooting tools, such as:
- ping.
- traceroute.
- arp.
- nslookup or dig.
- Basic packet-capture concepts.
- Basic ability to read network diagrams and technical documentation.
- Basic scripting or programming knowledge, preferably Python, is desirable.
- English proficiency at B2 level or higher, particularly in written and spoken technical communication.
- Strong logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to organize technical information and follow troubleshooting procedures.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and time-management skills.
- Willingness to learn new networking technologies and support methodologies.
- Customer-focused and solution-oriented mindset.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while seeking guidance when appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or projects involving data communications, network design, routing and switching, cybersecurity, or telecommunications.
- Familiarity with enterprise switching platforms or network operating systems.
- Basic knowledge of the following technologies:
- STP, RSTP, MSTP, or similar protocols.
- LACP.
- VRRP.
- QoS and CoS concepts.
- 802.1X and RADIUS.
- OSPF or BGP fundamentals.
- Multicast, IGMP, or IGMP snooping.
- Familiarity with Wireshark or other packet-analysis tools.
- Basic Linux or Unix command-line experience.
- Exposure to Python, Perl, Shell scripting, REST APIs, or network automation.
- Entry-level networking certifications, such as Network+, CCNA, JNCIA, or equivalent, are desirable but not required.
Work Model and Schedule
- Part-time internship: 20 hours per week.
- Hybrid work model.
- Two days per week onsite, with the remaining hours performed remotely according to business and team requirements.
- Participation in product-specific EX switching training is required.
- The intern must be able to balance work commitments with university studies.
Impact/Scope:
- University students actively enrolled in a university/college/institution pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a technical area of study, and who typically works during school breaks and then returns to their university. While this applies to most interns, there may be opportunities for full-time students to work as part-time interns during the school year in some countries.
