Role overview
About this role
At IBM Research, we are the innovation engine of IBM. Exploring what’s next in computing and shaping the technologies the world will rely on tomorrow. From advancing AI and hybrid cloud to pioneering practical quantum computing, we anticipate challenges and unlock new opportunities for clients, partners, and society. Working in Research means joining a team that accelerates discovery at the intersection of high-performance computing, AI, quantum, and cloud. You’ll collaborate with leading scientists, engineers, and visionaries to push boundaries and turn ideas into reality. With a culture built on curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, IBM Research offers the opportunity to grow your career while contributing to breakthroughs that transform industries and change the world. As a research intern with the IBM quantum error correction team, you will work alongside our researchers, your job will be to advance the field of quantum computing by investigating topics of importance to fault tolerant quantum computations. Areas of research include quantum error correction with a focus on decoding theory. During your internship, you will have the opportunity to work on challenging research problems as part of a diverse team in a global research organization. Our cross-disciplinary approach to research, coupled with the curiosity of our researchers and engineers, offers a unique opportunity to participate in scientific and industrial research. Interns have authored papers, filed patents, and contributed to open-source projects and IBM products during their time with us. • Applicants should be enrolled in an MSc or PhD programme in computer science, mathematics, physics or a related field focusing on quantum computing and quantum information. • Experience in an academic graduate program related to applicable area of quantum computing, such as error correction, decoding theory, or compilation. • Coursework or projects in applicable area. • Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages such as Python. • Passion for solving problems of strategic interest to IBM's roadmap for fault-tolerant quantum computing. • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research. • Demonstrated problem-solving skills. • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. • Strong publication record in high-impact journals or conferences. • Programming experience in core & scientific language (e.g. python, numpy, scipy, matplotlib) and Qiskit. • Familiarity with Git and/or Github. • Familiarity with AI tooling for research.
