Modern 5G and emerging 6G networks are reshaping how devices, services, and infrastructure communicate at scale. Research, validation, and cybersecurity assessment of these technologies increasingly rely on flexible, software-defined environments capable of rapidly deploying complex network scenarios. As next-generation network security continues to evolve, there is a growing need for automated security testing, cybersecurity validation, and security assessment frameworks aligned with industry standards and best practices.
This internship is centered around a micro cloud infrastructure purpose-built for 5G and 6G research, network security testing, and cybersecurity experimentation. Virtual machines are deployed on demand to support a wide range of telecommunications, cloud computing, and security research use cases. The intern will play a dual role: ensuring the reliable operation of the infrastructure while actively contributing to research and development efforts focused on security automation, cybersecurity test development, and network security validation.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, virtualization, network security, cybersecurity testing, 5G/6G technologies, and security-focused R&D within a state-of-the-art laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
We are looking for an intern who will take ownership of a micro cloud infrastructure that enables one-touch deployment of virtualized environments for 5G/6G research, network validation, and cybersecurity experimentation.
Day-to-day, this includes:
Infrastructure Management - Maintain, monitor, and support cloud-based and virtualized environments, ensuring the availability, reliability, and performance of deployed virtual machines, services, and cybersecurity research platforms.
User Support - Onboard users, manage access controls and permissions, and troubleshoot deployment, networking, and infrastructure issues so researchers can focus on their experiments and security assessments.
Testbed Development - Design, deploy, and maintain cybersecurity testbeds and virtual network environments tailored to specific 5G/6G architectures, threat scenarios, and security validation use cases.
R&D Contributions - Propose, develop, and implement automated and semi-automated cybersecurity test cases aligned with relevant security standards, frameworks, and specifications such as NIST, ETSI, and 3GPP.
Continuous Learning - Grow your expertise across open-source networking and cybersecurity technologies including Open5GS, srsRAN, Nmap, and Ettercap, while gaining exposure to Keysight cybersecurity and network testing platforms such as IoT Security Assessment, CyPerf, BreakingPoint, and LoadCore.
You will have access to our state-of-the-art Keysight laboratory environment, including real 5G/6G infrastructure, network testing equipment, cloud resources, and cybersecurity tools to bring these projects to life.
Qualifications
Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Network Engineering, or a related technical field.
Foundational knowledge of networking concepts and protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, virtualization, and cloud computing environments.
Understanding of communication protocols, packet flow analysis, network architecture concepts, handshakes, acknowledgements, and modern telecommunications systems, with a basic understanding of 5G and 6G network architectures.
- Knowledge of core cybersecurity principles, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA), and the ability to relate these concepts to real-world network and cloud security scenarios.
It's a plus if you have:
- Experience with infrastructure automation, scripting, or DevOps-related technologies using Python, Bash, Ansible, Terraform, or similar tools.
- Experience using version control systems such as Git or SVN.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an interest in diagnosing and resolving infrastructure, networking, or system-level issues.
- Experience working in Linux environments and with command-line (CLI) tools.
- Participation in Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions, security research activities, or hands-on use of cybersecurity tools.
- Exposure to virtualization, cloud platforms, or private cloud technologies such as OpenStack, Proxmox, KVM, or similar environments.
The ideal candidate would be available from 1st November 2026 for a minimum of 6 months.
