Role overview
About this role
We are seeking an Electrical Engineering student interested in design validation, automated testing, and hands-on laboratory work. The intern will work with experienced test engineers to develop and improve test methods, write test code, integrate laboratory instruments, collect and analyze measurement data, and document results for high-power electronic test and measurement products.
The position provides exposure to automated test set development, environmental testing, custom test hardware, and high-voltage/high-power power supply systems operating up to 2 kV and up to 1 MW. All high-energy laboratory work will be performed under appropriate supervision and established safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform hands-on electrical testing, collect measurement data, evaluate results against requirements, and clearly document test configurations and findings.
- Support environmental design-validation testing, including temperature, humidity, altitude, vibration, and mechanical shock testing, as applicable.
- Write, debug, and maintain test programs, instrument-control scripts, test sequences, data-logging routines, and analysis tools.
- Assist with the design, assembly, and validation of automated test sets used for design validation and production test.
- Control laboratory instruments using common test-and-measurement interfaces and software environments such as Python, C#, MATLAB, or VBA.
- Assist with troubleshooting across test software, instruments, fixtures, wiring, custom interface hardware, and the device under test.
- Follow established laboratory procedures and high-voltage/high-power safety practices while working under the direction of qualified engineers.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology
- Coursework or project experience in analog circuits, digital systems, electronics, instrumentation, or measurement techniques.
- Programming experience through coursework, laboratory assignments, personal projects, internships, or student design teams.
- Working knowledge of at least one programming or engineering environment, such as Python, C#, C/C++, LabVIEW, MATLAB, or VBA.
- Interest in design validation, automated testing, laboratory instrumentation, and hands-on hardware/software problem solving.
- Ability to analyze data, communicate technical results, and create clear engineering documentation.
- Ability to work safely and carefully in a laboratory environment and follow written test procedures.
- Experience with laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, electronic loads, power analyzers, or data-acquisition equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to instrument automation using SCPI commands, VISA, serial communications, Ethernet, USB, or GPIB.
- Coursework, project, or internship exposure to power electronics, high-voltage systems, regenerative power supplies, electronic loads, or high-power test equipment.
- Experience with PCB schematic capture or layout tools and basic board bring-up or soldering.
- Experience with 3D modeling software such as NX, Creo, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or an equivalent tool.
- Exposure to environmental testing, test chambers, data analysis, source control, or structured software development practices.
- Participation in engineering clubs or project teams such as Formula SAE, robotics, solar car, IEEE, or capstone design.
