Responsibilities
- Contribute to C++ and Python software used for compute-intensive and distributed workloads.
- Learn how applications are built, tested, deployed, and monitored on Linux and Windows HPC systems.
- Assist with profiling, debugging, and improving software performance, scalability, and resource utilization.
- Gain practical exposure to workload schedulers such as Slurm, LSF, or PBS.
- Help package and run applications using container technologies such as Docker; explore Kubernetes where relevant.
- Write automated tests, developer tools, scripts, and technical documentation.
- Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and team demonstrations with guidance from experienced engineers.
- Collaborate with software, infrastructure, DevOps, and product teams in an international R&D environment.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field.
- Coursework, projects, research, or prior internship experience using C++, Python, or both.
- Basic experience working in Linux, including using a shell and common development tools.
- Understanding of core software engineering concepts such as data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, testing, and version control.
- Interest in parallel computing, distributed systems, cloud computing, scientific software, or performance engineering.
- Ability to learn independently, ask good technical questions, and work effectively with a collaborative team.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Academic or personal projects involving multithreading, multiprocessing, GPU computing, clusters, or distributed applications.
- Exposure to Git, CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, or an HPC job scheduler.
- Familiarity with debugging or profiling tools such as gdb or perf.
- Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript; Angular experience is a plus for work involving dashboards or user interfaces.
- Familiarity with REST APIs, gRPC, networking concepts, or a public cloud platform such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Example Internship Projects
- Build a Python tool that submits, monitors, and reports on jobs running across an HPC cluster.
- Profile a C++ or Python workflow and implement measurable performance or resource-usage improvements.
- Containerize a simulation or data-processing workload and improve its repeatability across development and cluster environments.
- Create automated tests or a lightweight dashboard that improves visibility into distributed workload execution.
What You Will Learn
- Professional software development practices for production-quality R&D software.
- How HPC applications use Linux, schedulers, containers, and distributed computing resources.
- How to diagnose performance bottlenecks and validate improvements with data.
- How multidisciplinary and geographically distributed engineering teams deliver complex technical products.
Application Guidance
In your resume, briefly describe how you used relevant technologies in coursework, research, personal projects, open-source contributions, or previous internships. Include links to a portfolio or code repository when appropriate. Production experience is not required.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a curious and motivated student who enjoys solving technical problems, writing reliable code, and learning how software performs at scale. You do not need to meet every preferred qualification. We value strong fundamentals, practical project experience, and a demonstrated interest in HPC and distributed systems.
