R&D Software Engineer Intern

The High Frequency Technology Center (HFTC) of Keysight Technologies is seeking an intern to join our Factory Automation team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to software and systems that support semiconductor manufacturing operations.

Working alongside software engineers, automation engineers, process engineers, manufacturing personnel, and IT professionals, you will help develop solutions that improve factory efficiency, equipment utilization, operational visibility, and manufacturing processes. Projects may span software development, automation, data analysis, system integration, and manufacturing systems.

What We're Looking For

AI-Assisted Development

Our team leverages modern AI-assisted engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar technologies to accelerate research, development, troubleshooting, and documentation. These tools are used as engineering aids, not replacements for engineering judgment.

Candidates should be comfortable learning how to effectively use AI tools while maintaining responsibility for understanding, validating, testing, and supporting the solutions they create.

Internship Experience

This internship is designed to provide meaningful, hands-on engineering experience in a real manufacturing environment.

Interns will be assigned a defined project with clear objectives, ownership, and measurable outcomes. Throughout the internship, participants will work closely with experienced engineers while gaining exposure to software development, automation, manufacturing systems, and cross-functional collaboration.

By the conclusion of the internship, the goal is for each intern to have delivered a tangible project, feature, or system improvement that provides value to the organization. The experience should result in a meaningful accomplishment that can be showcased on a resume, discussed in future interviews, and serve as a foundation for continued professional growth.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Experience with at least one programming language
• Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills
• Ability to learn new technologies and work within existing systems
• Ability to take ownership of tasks and follow them through to completion

Ideal Experience

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

• Experience developing applications in Rust
• SQL and relational databases
• Full-stack web application development
• REST APIs and system integration
• State machines, workflow engines, or event-driven architectures
• Git and modern software development practices
• Manufacturing, automation, or industrial systems
• Personal, academic, open-source, or internship projects that demonstrate initiative and technical curiosity

CA Pay Range

(BS) $32.77 - $35.29

(MS) $40.32 - $43.42

(PhD) $49.83 - $53.67
