Construction Project Engineer

The Project Engineer will be expected to develop a strong understanding of data center construction while progressively taking responsibility for specific scopes, systems, and project deliverables.

Responsibilities

Construction & Field Execution

• Support the Construction Manager with day-to-day execution of assigned data center construction projects.
• Maintain an active presence in the field to understand construction progress, constraints, quality concerns, and upcoming activities.
• Monitor contractor work for general compliance with project drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and project requirements.
• Support coordination between the GC, trade contractors, design teams, commissioning teams, and Microsoft stakeholders.
• Assist with resolving field coordination and constructability issues.
• Track assigned issues and action items through resolution.
• Take ownership of defined work packages or construction scopes with guidance from the Construction Manager.
• Participate in construction walks, inspections, readiness reviews, and project meetings.

Schedule & Progress

• Develop an understanding of the overall project schedule, major milestones, and critical construction activities.
• Monitor progress of assigned scopes against the contractor’s schedule.
• Compare reported construction progress with actual field conditions.
• Identify potential delays or constraints and communicate them to the Construction Manager.
• Track upcoming activities and help confirm prerequisite work is complete.
• Support construction readiness for commissioning, energization, Integrated Systems Testing (IST), and turnover activities.

Quality

• Support Microsoft’s expectations for quality construction and a “build it right the first time” culture.
• Participate in quality walks and inspections with Microsoft, the GC, and trade partners.
• Identify incomplete, damaged, or potentially non-conforming work and communicate concerns to the appropriate project leadership.
• Track quality observations, punch-list items, and corrective actions through closure.
• Assist in identifying recurring quality issues and verifying that corrective actions are implemented.
• Develop an understanding of Microsoft construction and quality requirements.

Safety

• Actively support Microsoft’s safety culture and expectations.
• Participate in field safety walks and project safety discussions.
• Immediately communicate unsafe conditions or behaviors to appropriate project leadership.
• Support the Construction Manager and GC in ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
• Demonstrate through daily actions that safety takes priority over schedule and cost.

Technical & Design Coordination

• Support the RFI, submittal, and design clarification processes.
• Assist in coordinating field questions between contractors, designers, engineers, vendors, and Microsoft stakeholders.
• Review construction drawings and specifications associated with assigned scopes.
• Develop familiarity with data center mechanical, electrical, controls, architectural, structural, and technology systems.
• Help verify that approved design changes are communicated and incorporated into field execution.

Contractor Coordination

• Build productive working relationships with General Contractors and trade partners.
• Participate in contractor coordination and progress meetings.
• Track contractor commitments, action items, and required completion dates.
• Follow up on outstanding items and escalate concerns to the Construction Manager when appropriate.
• Develop the ability to professionally challenge contractors when field conditions, quality, or progress do not align with project requirements.
• Learn how to balance collaboration with appropriate contractor accountability.

Project Documentation & Closeout

• Support tracking of RFIs, submittals, quality observations, punch-list items, and other construction deliverables.
• Maintain accurate records of assigned project actions and decisions.
• Assist with project turnover and closeout activities.
• Support collection and verification of as-built drawings, warranties, training documentation, testing records, and other required turnover information.
• Help ensure construction documentation is complete before turnover to Commissioning and Operations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Construction Project Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience
• OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Construction Project Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience
• OR equivalent experience.
• 5+ years experience working on data center projects.

Background Check Requirements: 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Construction Project Management IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $97,600 - $188,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $125,000 - $206,400 per year.

Construction Project Management IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $77,800 - $153,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $102,200 - $169,900 per year.
